DK025 Antony Milton - Pucullpa to Iquitos riverboat pop manglings Dokuro is proud to present "Pucullpa to Iquitos riverboat pop manglings " the new effort of New Zealand artist Antony Milton, recorded upon the 'Gilmer IV', a cargo ship that carries stores and passengers along the Pucullpa and Amazon Rivers between the jungle cities of Pucullpa and Iquitos in Peru.
The basic methodology was to play over the top of a random selection of Peruvian pop songs (recorded off the radio in advance ) building up layers- including vocals- before finally deleting the original radio track.
There are a couple of interesting anomalies to this pattern. .. Milton wrote in his trip diary: That night he told me that he 'used to' work for Perus special police hunting down and 'disappearing' members of the Shining Path. He seemed quite distressed by his memories but it also occurred to me that as there was a violently oppressed insurgency of sorts currently happening down in this very region through which we were traveling that perhaps this was his real reason for being on the boat on his way to Iquitos. It was a very strange feeling to realize that I had recorded one of my favourite pieces with a member of a right wing death squad." The artwork in the booklet is a selection of photo from a series of murals at the Iquitos zoo. These relate various local myths about the jungle, the river, and the spirits and demons that live there. Link:
